Dreams vs. Goals

Dreams vs. Goals

I always take more away from my lessons with Lanny than just horsemanship.

When I bought this horse last April I had dreams, but no goals.

Brian Knapp said, “There is a difference between a dream and a goal. A dream is a gift you want to be given. A goal is something you work to achieve.”

A goal is something you work at. So what am I working for?

A buckle would be nice. I mean, who doesn’t like to win? A good horse I could trail ride on one day and compete on the next day would be pretty cool. Have a horse I or anyone else could use to help Matt at the ranch sorting cows? Sure.

In today’s lesson, we worked on lots of little things — moving shoulders, leg pressure and release, finding our “go” — and put them all together at the end for the most exciting flag work I’ve completed on this once-turnback horse. There was some STING. It was so exciting to see and feel little pieces of the puzzle come together.

So what am I working for right now? Tuning up the little things. Showing up. Trying to improve my horsemanship and then my horse.

Today was perfect. If I could freeze this feeling of a sound horse, a good ride and another hurdle overcome, I would make millions.

Thanks to Lanny, with each ride I become more confident, more in-tune with my horse and those goals become clearer and feel a lot closer than they did last April.

Taken from the Lanny Leach Obstacle Clinic we attended on 1/8/22.

Lanny’s motto is #RideWithAPurpose — and that’s my encouragement to you every time you saddle up. Whether you’re a pro, a novice adult getting back to showing in a new sport like myself, or you’re just getting into riding, show up and ride with a purpose, even if it’s for a nice hack down the trail.

Endless thanks again to Lanny and Kathy for all your encouragement and time spent on us.

Have a great ride! ✌🏻
